The Story Behind Burton
Burton Snowboards is the pioneer of snowboarding, the first ever snowboard manufacturer Burton was there when it all began. Burton’s ideas for the future of snowboarding gave way for the sport to grow becoming popular the world over. As one of the leading snowboard companies, Burton specializes in the production of snowboards, boots, bindings, outwear (jackets, pants), accessories (luggage, backpacks, hats and gloves) and apparel (tees, hoodies). With their state-of-the-art technology and style that can be found in their snowboards, accessories and apparel, Burton remains one of the most prominent manufacturers in snowboarding.
Burton was founded in 1977 by Jake Burton Carpenter in Manchester, Vermont. Burton first designed the Backhill, modeled after the Snurfer, the Backhill was a narrow board without bindings, but rather single straps with a rope and handle at the front of the board designed to help steer the board. As time went on Burton snowboards evolved becoming more efficient eventually adding bindings to their boards, removing the steering rope, and experimenting with different shapes, designs and materials.
Though snowboarding as a sport wasn’t widely accepted and even banned from ski resorts in the 80’s Burton keep pushing on further developing and growing their ideas. In 1985 Burton took over the National Snow Surfing Championship renaming it the U.S. Open Snowboard Championships where today it is one of the most popular snowboarding events.
Burton has used the idea of form and function to generate new technology utilized in many of their products. Some of the signature technologies used on Burton Snowboards includes an adjustment feature called The Channel that works with all types of bindings and allow for various settings, enhancing the feel and performance of the board. Many styles of Burton boots feature Speed Dial and Natural Flex to help improve performance and comfort of the boot. Burton infuses function and style in their outwear snow such as snow jackets and pants, featuring Gore-Tex to keep you warm and dry. Even Burton’s apparel comes equipped with a water-proofing technology Mist-Defy to keep away moisture.
Burton is a brand synonymous with snowboarding. Currently Burton sponsors a series of events as well as some of the most well know snowboarders in the world. Only specializing in the production of snowboards, snowboard equipment (boots, bindings and more) and snowboard apparel and outwear (jackets, pants, gloves, tees, hoodies), Burton has been, and still is one of the most predominant and leading names in the Snowboarding industry. With their roots deep in the history of snowboarding, Burton strives to bring their innovation to snowboarders everywhere.
