In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina. He was disturbed that these children had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. This fact, along with the plethora of styles and colorways available in lightweight, comfortable designs makes it pretty hard to stop adding to your collection of TOMS.
While in Argentina, Blake took to wearing the traditional alpargata style shoes that are customary in Argentina. The lightweight fabric and simple design became the inspiration for the first TOMS Shoes, the TOMS Classic.
Who is Tom of TOMS Shoes?
The TOMS Shoes name came from the original concept's name, "Shoes for Tomorrow's Projects". So don't look for TOM, he doesn't exist. TOMS = shoes for tomorrow's projects.
These days, the selection goes far beyond the TOMS Classics, but in the same traditional Argentine vein, we have the TOMS Bota, TOMS Cordones, TOMS Stitchouts and more.
