The term chinos typically refers to the material but also relates to a particular style of pants or shorts. Chino cloth is a strong workwear style cotton twill fabric that can come in an array of colors from khaki, grey, and black, to brown or even olive green. Chino pants and Chino shorts usually have a straight waist, slash hand pockets, and back welt pockets and no pleats.

Khaki pants or trousers, however, are made from a lighter weight fabric and feature a classic 5-pocket design like jeans. The word, Khaki, is used to describe the color of a pair of slacks since khaki chinos and khaki pants differ.
