Originally known as punchus, the poncho was one of the typical clothes of the Paracas, a pre-Inca culture from around 500 B.C. Many many many years later, surfers started to embrace ponchos, as early as the 1950's, as they were a warm garment to throw on when the sun went down and it started to get cold at the beach. This surfing tradition continues, and ponchos are not just for Paracas and modern-day surfers, but also a fashionable and comfortable garment for the rest of us.
