Zumiez Foundation Words

Zumiez has a long history of donating clothes to people in need in our communities. I formalized the Foundation as we grew and went public. The Foundation now has a board of directors made up of Zumiez employees.

With the leverage we have, we are able to produce thousands of cold weather items to donate to people in need. This reflects how we grew the chain, always give back, work to become a better person and teach new employees what you know and how to sell. We don't do it to be thanked or recognized. We do it because, many times in winter, people are cold!

The Zumiez Foundation's mission
is to accomplish two things:

1 2
  • What
  • Why
  • How
  • The Zumiez Foundation purchases warm clothes in order to make grants to people who need them in the communities served by Zumiez, especially during tough times.
  • We want to help people in need and we have the ability to leverage our industry relationships to get the items people need.
  • We find organizations in local Zumiez communities and partner with them to give away the clothing we purchase.
  • Teach Zumiez employees about the value of giving back, and then encourage and inspire them to channel their energy, passion, and leadership into becoming active community leaders who will be a force for change in whatever cause they truly connect with.
  • It’s important to Zumiez to create leaders who can help make this world a better place.
  • Empower our employees with the tools to help them identify what is important to them, decided what they can do to help, and get involved wherever they are in any way they can!

Sack of Potatoes Award:

It all started with Tom… He knew of people in need in his neighborhood and wanted to help out. His first time giving back was an actual “sack of potatoes”. Now he gives back to thousands through his generosity and love of people.

As a Foundation, we want to follow Tom’s example and give back to those who are great examples of giving back in their community. The Foundation consistently hears of Zumiez employees who contribute, volunteer, and donate.

Each year the Zumiez Foundation chooses individuals that are going above and beyond in their efforts and recognizes them with the Sack of Potatoes Award. Each recipient receives a donation of $1000 to give to an organization of their choice. We THANK these individuals, not just for what they do, but for what they inspire each of us to do.

Zumiez Foundation History:

Zumiez started giving formally in 2002 by purchasing jackets, flannel shirts, and blankets which were sent to 13 charitable organizations in Snohomish County, Washington.

Zumiez became a public company in the spring of 2005. Tom knew that he now had the ability to formalize and expand the giving by setting up a foundation. The Zumiez Foundation was legally established in the summer of 2005 as a private foundation and a separate company from Zumiez Inc.

- In 2012 we donated over 180,000 items to more than 180 organizations in 21 states. The Zumiez Foundation reaches out to both cold and warm weather areas, helping more than 60,000 men, women and children.

Charitable Organizations we donate to include Homeless Shelters, Schools, Transitional Programs, Food Banks and Religious Organizations that provide community support.

We donate Jackets, Blankets, Sweatshirts, Socks, Beanies, Gloves and T-shirts.

Our Goal is to reach more communities and more people in need. Thanks for all you do to help make this possible.
