California Transparency in Supply Chains Act SB 657

Our Commitment to Responsible Manufacturing

On January 1, 2012, the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010 (SB 657) will go into effect in the State of California. This law was designed to increase the amount of information made available by manufacturers and retailers regarding their efforts to address the issue of slavery and human trafficking within their supply chain. This will allow consumers to make better, more informed choices regarding the products they buy and the companies they choose to support.

Zumiez products are manufactured at independent factories around the world and our policy is to only work with those vendors who share our commitments to socially responsible and ethical business practices, including the protection of the rights and well being of individuals, promotion of equal opportunity, and respect for all laws and regulations applicable to apparel, related industries and to the environment. We believe that workers at factories have the right to freely choose employment, freedom of association and collective bargaining. Workers also have the right to a workplace free of harassment and unlawful discrimination. Each factory producing Zumiez products is required to meet these standards, as well as comply with all local labor laws and International Labor Organization conventions. Our Code of Conduct outlines our standards in the following areas:

Slavery and human trafficking can take many forms, including forced labor and child labor. Zumiez forbids the use of forced labor, debt bondage, slavery, human trafficking, child labor and physically abusive disciplinary practices by our suppliers. All individuals employed with our vendors shall be guaranteed freedom of movement. Overtime shall be voluntary and vendors shall conduct due diligence to prevent the recruitment or hiring of victims of trafficking, debt bondage or other types of exploitation by third parties such as labor brokers or contractors. Zumiez reserves the right to take whatever actions are necessary to protect its interests, including terminating its business relationship with any supplier that does not respect the Code or comply with its legal obligations.

In accordance with our internal Social Compliance program and the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010, Zumiez performs Vendor Assessments based on our Code of Conduct for all potential new vendors prior to entering a business relationship with them. This approach includes preliminary risk assessments and supplier assessment questionnaires and includes the following areas:

Supplier audits

Zumiez has established an audit program managed by an independent, accredited firm which evaluates our suppliers' compliance to the Zumiez Code of Conduct. These audits are unannounced, as detailed in the Sourcing Agreement. Areas of focus for each audit include worker age documentation, compensation, working hour documentation, and physical surroundings. Following the audits, suppliers are required to submit a Corrective Action Plan (CAP), which outlines all planned remediation for issues found during the audit process. Zumiez has a zero-tolerance policy for the presence of forced and/or child labor and abusive disciplinary practices. If any zero-tolerance items are uncovered during the audit, Zumiez reserves the right take whatever actions are necessary to protect its interests, including terminating its business relationship with any supplier that does not respect our Code of Conduct or its legal obligations.

Supplier agreements

Zumiez holds its direct suppliers contractually responsible for adhering to our policies as detailed in the Sourcing Agreement and Social Compliance Policy. All contractors and secondary suppliers they use must meet the same standards for responsible manufacturing. Any violations will result in immediate termination of the direct vendor relationship if remediation efforts fail.

Internal Training

Zumiez encourages its employees who are directly or indirectly responsible for Supply Chain Management to obtain training on how to mitigate risk associated with workers rights, slavery, and human trafficking. Such training includes but is not limited to attending supply chain seminars and webinars offered by independent companies.

Internal Accountability

Zumiez reviews its Commitment to Responsible Manufacturing on an annual basis to ensure that it is in compliance with all state and federal laws regarding worker's rights and forced or child labor, including the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010.


Zumiez recognizes fair labor practices as a crucial element of human rights, and in accordance with the California Transparency in Supply Chain Act of 2010, is committed to doing its part in the eradication of slavery and human trafficking. We believe it is important to help improve global labor standards in the apparel and related industries, and will only work with those partners who share a common belief. This document will be reviewed annually and updated with any new or changed processes to our Social Compliance program.
