Inspired by slipping off his boat into the bay below, Paul Sperry designed the world’s first boat shoe, designed specifically to grip the slippery surfaces of a ship’s deck. Sperry’s first shoes were sold to his fellow yachtsmen, before becoming a mainstream product in 1939 thanks to wide adoption from the US Navy. Sperry, who himself had served in the Navy, had such an eye for design that the shoes, largely unchanged from the original designs, became an American staple by the late 1960s, worn by icons such as John F. Kennedy, Fred Rogers and Lauren Hutton. For the past 50 years, Sperry has continued to grow with exciting new materials and styles. Fashion-forward yet timeless, Sperry’s footwear and apparel continues to innovate, including starting to collaborate with other brands starting 2008, to bring an even greater and more diverse range of looks to the already deep brand portfolio. Starting in 2019, Sperry introduced their ongoing sustainability platform, partnering with BIONIC to ensure their shoes are stronger, and more environmentally friendly, than ever.
